HOCKESSIN, DE – The 90 degree mid-May temperatures were about as hot as Sanford’s pitcher, Vincent Leo, on May 17th against the A.I. DuPont Tigers.

The senior pitcher began his dominant afternoon by ending an early Tiger threat, getting a key strikeout with a runner on third in the top of 1st.

Leo continued his success on the mound and at the plate as he singled and advanced to second on an error by shortstop James Donnelly. Leo then stole third and scored the first run of the game off of an RBI single from Freshman Jack Valentine.

In the bottom of the second, Sanford would capitalize on two walks with the bases loaded by Tiger’s pitcher Joseph Orsini, leading to a Warriors 3-0 lead.

Leo showed his dominance on the mound, throwing two more scoreless innings.  He continued his hot game at the plate by tripling in the bottom of the fourth and being knocked in by another Valentine RBI single.

It was smooth sailing for Leo until he encountered trouble in the top of the sixth, giving up a run by walking the bases loaded. Leo would, however, regain his control and get a strikeout looking to end the Tiger’s threat.

Valentine would then come in to relieve Leo in the top of the seventh, keeping Sanford fans in attendance on the edge of their seats after giving up a RBI double to cut the Tiger deficit to 4-2.

With nervousness in the air, as the go ahead run came to the plate, Valentine got the last batter to ground out to first to end the game. He ended his day after striking out two and giving up one earned run.

Leo’s great game ended after racking up 8 strikeouts over 6 innings, tallying two hits and scoring two runs, as he led his team to a 4-2 win over the A.I. DuPont Tigers. The Warriors with this win improved to 3-13 on the season, while the Tigers fell to 5-12.
